Steel Forge Welding Flux
Borax powder is used as a flux when welding iron and steel. It lowers the melting point of the unwanted iron oxide (scale), allowing it to run off, to keep the metals clean during the forging process.
Directions for use
- Close up the joint: A tight joint is easiest to weld
- Apply flux with metal at red heat: Flux should stick onto surface and turn transparent
- Return metal to fire and wait until the flux surface looks wet or glossy with bubbles forming on the surface adjacent to the weld
- Remove from the fire and hammer weld with successively heavy hammer blows
